  • 10:30 Back from an evening watching lava flow into the sea. All four elements - earth, air, fire, water. Spectacular. Red gold light.
  • 10:32 There was also a breakthrough up the slopes. First the trees caught fire, then the lava rolled down the slope. Geography in action.
  • 11:09 Introduced species fail: the mongoose in Hawaii. Mongoose are diurnal. Rats are nocturnal. Predator does not eat prey. Result: nene gone.
  • 20:19 The Dolphin Bay Hotel here in Hilo leaves a stem of apple bananas out every morning for guests to pick their own breakfast. Mmmm.
  • 20:20 Going through last night's eruption pictures. The long exposures with manual focus have come out really well. GorillaPod FTW.

One of my ambitions is to watch lava flow into the sea. Your recent posts have reminded me that I have got to get to Hawaii, though like you I'm not a habitual foreign traveller. We'll try and include it in our next round-the-world trip I think (currently pencilled in for 2015).

It's an amazing place. And really quite inexpensive, too - especially if you're already on the west coast of the US (which we were).
