Dear Lazyweb

Does anyone know of a good place to watch a shuttle launch?

It seems as though we have one of those rare chances, when we're in the right place at the right time...

We're currently staying in Orlando, fairly close to SR528 and have a rental car. I suspect we'll need to go to Titusville, but once we're there, where?

These sites seem helpful, but we'd appreciate any additional information.

Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral. Awesome.

Don't go to Jetty Park. It is a well known spot but it is not the best nor closest for the shuttle. It is the best for Delta 2 launches only.

Titusville is the place to go, 100%. Closest view without buying tickets (now sold out) and clear view across the water.

Good luck.

Oh, and as for specific spots in Titusville, Spaceview Park is about the nicest place to wait it out. They provide audio and sometimes even set up video screens to go with the audio originating from NASA TV.

It's a block south of 406/Garden Street. Take 528 to I-95 north; Exit 220 and go right for the fastest route to this location.

Try this....

Not sure if they've sold out or not.

I'm jealous, it was supposed to launch in May when I was at a conference but got hailed on.

I can't comment on Jetty Park. When we were there for a night launch (as with you, a 'right place at the right time' bit of serendipitous luck) we drove to Titusville, found parking (there was a fair amount around), and followed folks to the shoreline, avoiding the occasional fire ant mound (pointed out by the locals).

Titusville is the place
Titusville is definitely the place for a shuttle launch if you cannot or do not want the tickets (which are now sold out):

Jetty Park is actually not the place for the shuttle (though it is for Delta 2 launches), being much further and having no view of the launch pad itself. I highly recommend making the trip to Titusville no matter where you are, including if it scrubs coming back; you will not regret it :-)

Good luck. -Ben

I asked on a mailing list that has some local people on. One of them said ...

" Probably the best place to watch is one of the parks along the Indian River in Titusville. Its about 12 miles from the river to launchpad 39A. Make sure they get there early and stake out a spot. And if they've got one, a scanner tuned to 146.940 will let them listen to the KSC audio being retransmitted over the local ham repeater. "
