Pimp my words: OpenID and Microsoft

Here's a piece for IT Pro that I pulled together late last night, as news about Microsoft's support for OpenID rolled around the world.
Speaking at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates outlined the company's refreshed identity strategy - including support in Windows CardSpace for the OpenID 2.0 identity standard. As part of an interoperability agreement OpenID will also be extended to handle phishing-resistant credentials, adding a new layer of trust to ecommerce sites.

We've recently spoken to folk like Kim Cameron, Dick Hardt (gotta love his blog's URI and title!) and brad about OpenID, and it's been interesting to watch the identity coalition coming together around this and other key identity technologies. Good news for anyone interested in digital identity.

> OpenID will also be extended ...

Ummm ... do Microsoft appreciate that a lot of the (open-source committed) sites that use OpenID simply will not adopt proprietary, closed extensions to the standard, do they understand how open source works, and are they intending to make sure that any extensions remain open?

> Key open source developers have welcomed the news ...

So do I; I'm interested to see how this plays out, and I hope that Microsoft succeeds in not blowing it.

This won't be proprietary extensions.

This is a collaborative extension of the open standard - Sxip identity are actually acting as the coordinators for the project.

As Brad pointed out in his blog post, there are no defined authntication methods for OpenID by design - it's so it can have multiple authorisation tools built into it...

I thought this was fantastic news - having MS climb onto the OpeID wagon could give it the big push it needs. I'm looking forward to being able to use my LJ URI all over the place.

So, when are we going to see Yadis and XRI support for LiveJournal?

Interestingly it looks as though LJ is not sending the correct headers to Yadis...

I sit in my garrett in icy London and appear to have missed something...

I've been to many weird conference intros, but that takes the prize...
