Sometimes the headline is just right...

I had to laugh at this Slashdot headline:

The Backhoe, The Internet's Natural Enemy.

It reminded so much of the Onion's classic (for wide definitions of classic) "War On String May Be Unwinnable, Says Cat General".

There is a theory occasionally expounded in the Scary Devil Monastery which says that any survival-kit should include a length of fibre-optic cable.

If you are lost/marooned-on-an-island or othrwise in need of rescue assistance, you open the survival-kit, take out the enclosed length of fibre-optic cable and bury it.

You then wait a while and a guy driving a backhoe will come along to dig up the fibre. You then ask him where you are/if he can rescue you.

Good headline about a very annoying problem. Road construction season is starting soon, and I know at work we'll be up to our eyeballs in construction-induced outages at least once a fortnight.
