I have the feeling that books 1-3 of the trilogy ending in TCTM were actually intended to be a single big fat book either before Wil started writing, or shortly after the publisher got their hands on the big fat MS.
I also have the feeling that there are Loose Ends™ that remain untied, leaving open the possibility of sequels that explore the post-irridium-age/post-fall era. (Note the two people in the medical fax that Bruno discovers and leaves be in his headlong dash to send off to the author for a climax to the series, for example.)
Alternatively, he just found the headache of writing a 500,000 word story ran away with him -- especially when he realized it was actually a tragedy, but he'd started out by setting it in a comedy universe.
