The square root of minus one

Inspired by a conversation on IRC this afternoon...

How do you write down the symbol for the square root of minus one? (Otherwise known as "are you an electrical and electronic engineer or not?")

The sqaure root of minus one is also well-known to mathematicians who have never been anywhere near a fusebox or a bit of wire.

Ah, but the point here is the difference in notation between disciplines...

I always thought of it more as i than i.

Ditto.

But never j.

But I wasn't sure if I could use italics in a poll!

both... IIRC - started off (engineering) using j, moved more into computing and adjusted to using i

IIRC traditionally 'i' was the standard notation, but because of the inevitable confusion with that of current engineers shifted to using j.

Have used both on occasion, though usually i, and still recall that square root isn't single-valued.

Used both in the past, but no need for any non-coursework maths in my life for years.

I don't know why people don't have tick boxes on these things.

[x] i
[x] j
[x] k

J'm sometjmes an electrjcal engjnur, and sometimes J can even spell jt. But most of the time I'm not talking to electrical engineers, so use i.

And quaternions just hurt my poor little brane.
