Park on your phone

Seems Wandsworth Council has done a deal with Parkmobile, to introduce a "pay by mobile" parking scheme in the streets round here. It all seems a little more hi-tech than I expected, as you need a transponder in the car to allow parking attendents to see if you're legally parked.

But basically all you need to do is park, and then make a phone call to register the zone you're parked in - and then it behaves just like a standard pay and display system. You do need to make another call to end the session - and the system will text you if you're running out of time...

It's an interesting idea, but I think a little too complex at the moment - it doesn't cope with visitors to the area...

We looked at building a couple of these systems and the problem is in the back end and what the traffic wardens use. I suspect it will improve over time.

I'm guessing the transponder talks to the Pocket PC devices our traffic wardens carry...

Actually less technical than that. You input the number of your parking bay into a WAP page, and the wardens had access to a database of elapsed time, bay and reg number.
