More fakery

After dinner this evening, and a day hidden in conference sessions in the bowels of the hotel, I went for a walk down the strip, to enjoy more of the adult theme park that is Las Vegas. This time, I ventured further afield than the various fake Italies, taking in Paris and an erupting volcano, before returning to the calm canals of Venice...

The Eiffel Tower outside Paris looms into the night sky.

In fire and light, a volcano erupts with the timing of a nocturnal old faithful...

Paintings cover the ceiling of the entrance to the Venetian.

Gondoliers sing their passengers around the Grand Canal.

It may be daylight on the canal, but it's a romantic night in St Mark's Square...

It is a pretty surreal place, isn't it?

I used to view Vegas as someplace I would never want to see until I visited it. Once I did visit it, I thought it had some appeal for two or three trips... it's certainly something to see.

Now I find it kind of boring and unattractively "in your face" most of the time -- though it makes a good base of operations for trips around the area.

The Grand Canyon. Hoover Dam/Lake Mead. Joshua Tree. Red Rock canyon. The Mojave Desert when the desert flowers bloom. Long rides into Arizona... Old route 66. Flagstaff, Sedona, and Arcosanti.

Do yourself a favor sometime... rent a big American automobile and get the hell out of Vegas! ;-)
