Flowers of Edo flutter like words...

An interesting discussion on why English-language haiku don't need to strictly follow a 5/7/5 rule, and suggesting that shorter, freeform haiku are more true to the original intention of the form...

Interesting. I also read an argument somewhere recently that Japanese haiku are also spoken a lot faster (or is it slower?) and thus approximate to fewer (or is it more?) English syllables for a given performance effect.
