FAVORITE TV SHOWS? The West Wing, 24, Buffy

Are you not irritated beyond endurance at the way BBC2, and now Channel 4 as well, keep suspending transmission of these programmes to make way for non-events like the World Snooker Championship? This is now the fourth week with no Buffy on Thursdays....and there's only four episodes left in the current series. I shall have to phone in another complaint to the BBC's Duty Officers.

Channel 4 isn't showing The Sopranos this evening, either. Nor was there any announcement or explanation of this last week. I shall have to complain to Channel 4 as well.

Re:
Yup... Sport should just go to a digital channel of its own!

The best argument for digital television, indeed. Given that darts and snooker (to name but two) appeal only to niche audiences, there is no reason at all for them to take up space on prime-time mainstream channels.

(On those occasions when I've turned on the television for a late film on a Sunday evening to be greeted by an announcement that programmes are running late because the channel has decided to stay with the "exciting" (sic) snooker final from wherever, I've often fallen out of my chair with laughter. What's remotely exciting about two non-entities in waistcoats pushing balls about with a stick? Grrr. Snarl. Rant.)

Sport
If it applies to snooker, it 10x applies to horse racing ... a bunch of horses start at one point in a course and run to another point, and one of them gets there first, meanwhile a bunch of midgets are beating them with riding crops ... at worst very, very boring; at best, terribly kinky (something about flogging a live horse I'd guess...) :-)

Soccer likewise, south American soccer 1.5 times as boring, Italian 1.8x, French 2.0x and anywhere else, 3.0x.

The best bits of most motor racing and extreme sports is the anticipation about whether they will crash (the second best bit is if the coverage actually gives you some feeling of speed) since the anticipation and empathy of both of those can get the adrenaline pumping, particularly if they have good camera shots (helmet mounted etc.) so you can imagine being there. If you can't get into that mindset, then motor racing is boring too.

Next there are things like snowboarding, ice dance, modern rhythmic gymnastics etc. where one of the prime reasons for watching is the artistic and skill elements, and again unless you can appreciate and get in tune with that, then they are boring (and silly!)

And finally there are things like gymnastics, swimming, rugby etc. which can be watched for some of the above reasons, or just to lust over variously shaped bodies in outfits that don't hide much.

Personally, I used to really enjoy snooker (and have watched a couple of sessions this time), I quite enjoy watching a few games of darts (because I reckon with practice that I'd have a chance of doing ok, not world championship, but good enough ... captained our Uni team and beat Goldsmith's!). I have a love/hate thing with formula one and can watch a little bit of most motor sports, but will change over if soccer comes on (and will switch off if horse racing comes on!)

Mmmmmmm, definitely garlic mayo Schwartzburger for me too!

That's if you don't mind being surrounded by a garlic glow for the next 24 hours. :)

I am reclaiming my Geekiness.

I will revel in my essentially geeky nature

I love superfluous technology. I wear NTK and ThinkGeek t-shirts. I collect SF and comic art. I play role playing games. I have a web site. I work in IT. I have been mentioned on NTK.

I am Geek! Hear me blog!
