Boris Johnson at the launch of the London bicycle hire scheme: "In 1904, 20% of journeys were made by bicycle and in London. I want to see that kind of figure again. If you can't turn the clock back to 1904 ladies and gentlemen, what is the point of being a Conservative?"

I'd seen that quote earlier on Twitter, but had assumed it was a paraphrase of some less accurate official statement. Oh deary me...

OTOH 1904: Churchill left the conservative unionist party to become a liberal and the party dug itself into the ground by 1906...

Poor old Boris. This is self-evidently meant to be a joke about people's perceptions of the Conservative Party, and tomorrow the papers will shred him over it.

I don't know what he does to his minders, but Boris in full unscripted flow scares me..

As well as the political situation then, doubtless there are people looking up what else that represents apart from ten years away from a World War.
