A few years ago that would have a cost a couple of million? Does that make you a millionaire? Hopefully they will still need to pay as reasonably well to understand and use all this information.

how on earth do you back it all up? :)

we have about 500Gb here, and oodles of free space.

Oh, it's oodles of space too. It's 120GB here, 120GB there and so on... It's also the little 60GB drives in the laptops, and the firewire back up disks...

That's a ridiculously large amount of storage
Why I only have the 120Gb (80+40) in my celeron, the spare 40Gb maxtor to try to resurrect the other two 40Gb maxtors and maybe another 20-40 Gb in small change around the place, so only around 0.25 of a Terabyte.

Oh, and about 200Mb of SmartMedia for the digital camera ... shame you can't boot more machines from a compact flash or smart media card ... imagine carrying around a copy of windows on something smaller than an After 8 mint and just walking up to hardware in a cybercafe/work/wherever, sticking in your card (with, say, 1Gb of essential files and configuration) and pulling up your own desktop, with your own preferences, with your own Word dictionary and your own IE bookmarks file... and bandwidth and security wise, it's going to be faster and safer sticking your little bit of black plastic into a slot for a fair while yet than downloading a Gig over even a fairly wide net connection.

Of course once I buy the TiVo
... and upgrade it to twin 120Gb drives, this will effectively increase my "data empire" ... but then it isn't actually "computer hard drive" space in the same way that I can't count the CD-RW in the CD drive, the stack of CDs on the shelf or the stack of mini-discs all over the place!

A hundred gig here, a hundred there; pretty soon you're talking real memory.

Even with 9 computers running, I think we're still under 0.25TB in the house -- we tend not to upgrade very often, and the biggest drives are 20's. The file server is getting full, but that's only because I was waiting for it to pass a full year of uptime before installing the 18GB drive I got for it some time ago. If it ain't broke, ...

I think my next disk purchase will be a couple of 120's.

Why "urk"?

Unless it's all full ...
