Seeing as the first trailer is out, I have to say: me!

Watch(ed)men

Some backlot shots of the Vancouver sets for the Watchmen movie have emerged.

In good news, they appear to be very faithful to Dave Gibbons' art - even down to the neon on the GungaDiner...

Many Worlds Get Smaller.

  • Nov. 24th, 2007 at 11:00 AM
It turns out that E from Eels is the son of Hugh Everett III, the Everett in Everett-Wheeler.

He's just made a film about him...
Shortly after my father died the phone started ringing. My father was Hugh Everett III. When he was 24 he wrote a ground-breaking thesis about physics most commonly known as “the many worlds theory”. It challenged the accepted notion of how the world works in such a huge way, stating that there were actually countless versions of ourselves splitting off and going through as many different scenarios as you could imagine, and the physics powers that be (Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr) were having none of this. They weren’t about to let a 24-year-old knock their faces off the Mount Rushmore of physics. Getting no encouragement, my father gave up on quantum physics.
Interesting stuff.

"Nobody puts baby in the corner"

  • Nov. 8th, 2007 at 8:26 PM
That's apparently the 10th most quoted line from a film, according to a BBC news story.

The rest of the the quotes are pretty run of the mill, and much of what I'd have expected:

1. "I'll be back." The Terminator
2. "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Gone With The Wind
3. "Beam me up, Scotty." Star Trek
4. "May the force be with you." Star Wars
5. "Life is like a box of chocolates." Forrest Gump
6. "You talking to me?" Taxi Driver
7. "Show me the money." Jerry Maguire
8. "Do you feel lucky, punk?" Dirty Harry
9. "Here's looking at you, kid." Casablanca
But that number 10? No. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say it. And I hang out with a lot of of film-literate folk...

So. Pop quiz time: can any of you remember what film it's from? (No peeking now!).

Eon, Animated

The CGSociety's annual competition took a different form this year: producing CGI trailers and concept art for a hypothetical film of Greg Bear's Eon.

There's some really fantastic stuff there, like the image I've linked to, and this mix of CGI and live action. Greg Bear was one of the judges, and comments on the images.

Woody Allen gets everywhere

I managed to get a reference to my favourite Woody Allen film into a hefty piece on the history of portable media for Tom's Hardware, which I helped [info]marypcb research.

Great Movies, Re-enacted By Stationery

Twenty scenes from famous films, put together using common pieces of office equipment.

Can you guess them all?

I'm stuck on number 8 and number 9. They don't seem to be "Jaws IV" or "Convoy"...

Sky by Broadband cracked?

  • Sep. 8th, 2006 at 8:09 PM
So has someone cracked the security on Sky's broadband video on demand service? Or is there another explanation for this email I received this morning?
We’re currently carrying out an essential update to the Sky by broadband security system, and unfortunately this means we’ve had to temporarily suspend access to movie downloads and some sports content. But don’t worry, this won’t affect your computer and you can still bookmark content for when it’s up and running again.

We aim to restore full access to all Sky by broadband content as soon as possible and we’ll keep you posted on progress. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this disruption may cause, and hope you’ll continue to enjoy using the Sky by broadband service.
Inquiring minds and all that...

Film Snark

Watching "The Girl Next Door" I remarked that the film-makers had proved that no-one could remake "Risky Business". After all, they'd tried very hard indeed...

2001 Explained (sort of)

If you ever got bogged down in Kubrick and Clarke's masterpiece, then try this rather spectacular piece of Flash that attempts to explain just what's going on...

I don't agree with chunks of the thesis of this piece, but then I've read Lost Worlds Of 2001, which goes a long way to showing what Clarke and Kubrick were aiming for...
