Smoke gets in your eyes...

That big explosion and oil fire in Hemel Hempstead? While it didn't wake us up, you can see the smoke pillar from here in Putney - and there's a smear of black across the whole sky now. It reminds me of being in LA during the wildfires of 2003.



I took the photograph up on our roof terrace at about midday.

It's a biiiig fire - you can also see the smoke plume from orbit. It's the black blob in the middle of Southern England in this picture:

Ah, thank you ... I was just about to start a hunt for an aerial/satellite shot. I've just come back from Heathrow, and the plume/inversion effect is pretty remarkable, even on the south side of London. In the time it took me to drive from/back to Junction 5 it has spread remarkably, and it's now clearly visible as far down the M20 as Aylesford/Maidstone, though the skies are still clear in Folkestone at present. The light is very spooky, like an eclipse.
