Embedded XP is in a lot of networked fit-and-forget kit (like ATMs) along with embedded Linux. They don't talk to the internet except through very limited firewalls and they don't have a lot of the security attack vectors like full-feature HTTP browsers, Adobe Reader, Java etc. Embedded XP is a box-of-Legos OS supporting only the apps built on it with only necessary modules and the rest are never installed "just in case" -- Windows Update keeps on whining it wants me to upgrade the Card Reader facility on Win 8, not something I'm really ever likely to use but it's in there somewhere.

Embedded XP has extended support running up to 2017 I think compared to its consumer cousin which loses support at the end of April this year.
